- Nobel laureate admits the emergence of human-level AI in the next 10 years
The creation of a universal artificial intelligence (AGI) with human-level cognitive capabilities may occur within the next decade. This was announced on August 4 by Nobel laureate and head of DeepMind Demis Hassabis.
"I don't know if it will happen in an instant. Perhaps this will happen gradually <...> But we will have something that could reasonably be called AGI, demonstrating all the cognitive abilities available to humans, perhaps in the next 5-10 years, or maybe even earlier," he said in an interview with The Guardian.
According to Hassabis, responsible implementation of AGI can lead to "radical abundance", increasing human productivity and paving the way to a new level of technological prosperity. He also suggested that the upcoming AI revolution could surpass the industrial one in scale and speed by 10 times.
At the same time, the expert pointed out the risks associated with the development of technology. Among the main problems, he named the high energy consumption of AI systems and their impact on the labor market.
On August 1, The Times newspaper stated that the probability of human extinction due to artificial intelligence (AI) is at least 95% if technology development continues at the current pace. It was noted that AI is currently at an early stage of development, but things may change later.
