Oncologists have predicted 618,000 deaths from cancer in 2025

In 2025, 2,041,910 new cases of cancer and 618,120 deaths from cancer are projected. This is stated in the report of the American Cancer Society, published on the PubMed Central portal. Izvestia reviewed the study on August 2.

The largest number of deaths in men is associated with lung cancer and colorectal cancer. In men, prostate cancer is added to them, and in women, breast cancer. These forms of cancer remain the deadliest, despite an overall decrease in cancer mortality. Since 1991, almost 4.5 million deaths have been prevented by reducing smoking, early detection of a number of tumors, and improved treatment methods.

"Cancer mortality continues to decline, but future achievements are at risk due to the growing burden of disease among middle-aged and young people, especially women," the publication emphasizes.

The report records a steady increase in cancer incidence among women. In the age group of 50-64 years, the figures have already exceeded those for men (832.5 versus 830.6 per 100,000). In women under 50 years of age, the incidence rate is 82% higher than in men: 141.1 versus 77.4 per 100,000. In 2002, this difference was 51%.

The document also notes that in 2021, lung cancer among people under 65 was more often diagnosed in women (15.7 per 100,000) than in men (15.4 per 100,000). The authors emphasize that progress in the fight against cancer will require investments in prevention and access to quality treatment.

Kirill Masliev, Candidate of Medical Sciences, member of the State Council Commission on Active Long-term Life, Head of the Department of Preventive Medicine at RUDN University, founder of the Heroes Charitable Foundation, warned about the possible development of oncology due to exposure to the sun. According to him, the safe time spent in direct sunlight is individual and depends on the time of day and the type of human skin. The sun is considered to be the most gentle before 10:00 in the morning and after 16:00 in the evening.
