- The political scientist pointed to the difficult relations between the West and Israel due to the recognition of Palestine.
The West's relations with Israel are becoming increasingly complicated amid the issue of recognizing Palestine. On July 31, political analyst Alexander Asafov told Izvestia, commenting on reports that Canada intends to officially recognize Palestine as a state.
"Of course, there is a pro-American mainstream in relations with Israel, but, nevertheless, there is a certain other view related to a number of circumstances. These circumstances are connected with such an indirect declaration of the anti—American position," the source said.
He noted that among the citizens of France and Britain there are a significant number of people who support Palestine and express anti-Israeli views.
Asafov also pointed out that some countries seek to assert their independence and subjectivity, opposing the pro-American and pro-Israeli consensus.
"It is difficult to assume further steps, as far as it can affect at all. We have enough partially recognized and unrecognized countries for which, in fact, little changes. But here, Palestine is waiting for some kind of active involvement in the situation, support not only at the level of recognition or future recognition, or an expression of sympathy, but also a cause," the expert noted.
Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney announced earlier, on July 30, that Canada intends to recognize the state of Palestine at the 80th session of the UN General Assembly in September 2025. However, to do this, the Palestinian Authority will need to reform its governance system, as well as hold elections in the state in 2026, in which Hamas will not be able to participate.
Prior to that, on July 24, French leader Emmanuel Macron announced plans to recognize Palestine. He noted that this will contribute to ending the Palestinian-Israeli conflict in the Gaza Strip, as well as rescue and comprehensive assistance to local residents. Later, on July 29, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer also announced his readiness to recognize Palestine at the UN General Assembly.
