Doctors Belaya and Sushkevich were found guilty in the case of the death of a baby
The jury found Elena Belaya, the acting chief physician, and Elina Sushkevich, an anesthesiologist and intensive care specialist at the regional perinatal center in Kaliningrad, guilty in the case of the death of a baby. This was reported on July 30 by a correspondent of Izvestia from the courtroom.
One of the witnesses told the meeting that during the morning meeting at the maternity hospital, Belaya ordered to rewrite the history of childbirth and newborns, as well as inform the victim about the stillbirth of her child. This decision was made in order not to spoil the statistics of the medical institution.
In addition, another witness saw the baby alive in the ward, on a ventilator, but Belaya ordered the nurses to leave the room, and later announced the death of the child. She also added that two days later, by order of the acting chief physician, all data about the incident was erased.
The third witness, an obstetrician-gynecologist who delivered the victim, claimed that the child was alive and the mother was worried about him.
According to the prosecution, in November 2018, a woman was admitted to maternity hospital No. 4 in Kaliningrad, who gave birth to a boy weighing about 700 g at an extremely early stage of pregnancy. The Investigative Committee (IC) of the Russian Federation has established that Belaya and Sushkevich decided to kill the child.
It was later reported that an expensive drug was needed to maintain the baby's vital functions, and Belaya allegedly decided not to waste the resources of the maternity hospital. The investigation believed that she had instructed the baby to be given a dose of magnesium sulfate, and to write in the birth history that the child was stillborn.
In September 2022, Sushkevich and Belaya were sentenced on charges of the death of a premature baby. Sushkevich was sentenced to 9 years in prison, and Belaya to 9.5 years.
