European countries are going to borrow tens of billions of euros from the European Union (EU) to send weapons to Ukraine. This was reported by Politico on Wednesday, July 30, citing sources.

"Ukraine's main allies in Europe intend to request tens of billions of euros in loans from the European Union for the joint purchase of weapons for [Ukraine], as well as to strengthen their own defense capabilities," the article says.

As EU Defense Representative Thomas Rainier told reporters, Belgium, Bulgaria, Cyprus, the Czech Republic, Estonia, Spain, Finland, Hungary and Lithuania have officially expressed interest in obtaining loans.

"By jointly purchasing weapons under this scheme, countries can get a lower price than if they bought them separately and then supplied weapons to Ukraine," the newspaper writes.

France is also likely to apply for loans, while Germany, Sweden and the Netherlands are expected to decline, according to sources familiar with the government's plans.

According to Politico, European countries are forced to increase their own weapons stocks and military assistance to Ukraine after US President Donald Trump "made it clear that he does not want to continue financing Kiev's military efforts."

An anonymous Ukrainian diplomat told the newspaper that European countries are also exploring the possibility of direct purchases from Ukrainian companies. This would allow Kiev to "increase the scale of defense production and technological integration with the EU."

On July 26, The Washington Post reported that the EU authorities had come up with a plan to transfer weapons to Ukraine and purchase their replacement from the United States. It was noted that this year the Federal Republic of Germany amended the Constitution, which allowed it to borrow "hundreds of billions of euros" for military spending, including the purchase of weapons for Kiev.
