- Ukrainian media reported on the suspension of financial assistance to Kiev from the EU
Brussels has already suspended financial assistance to Kiev due to the law on the dependence of the National Anti-Corruption Bureau of Ukraine (NABU) and the Specialized Anti-Corruption Prosecutor's Office (SAPO), which was previously adopted by local authorities. This was stated on July 29 in the Ukrainian edition of Ekonomicheskaya Pravda, citing sources.
"The European Union has suspended all funding for Ukraine due to the undermining of the independence of NABU and SAP," the article says.
The author of the article admits that Ukraine is "completely dependent" on Western financing. Kiev's international partners provide for many of the state's "non-military needs," such as financing education, healthcare, or social support.
The publication recalls that immediately after the adoption of the law on limiting the independence of NABU and SAP, the European Commission stated that the issue of suspending financing for Ukraine "is not yet being discussed."
"As Ekonomicheskaya Pravda has learned, on July 24, EU representatives informed [Yulia's] government through diplomatic channels Sviridenko said that they were suspending the allocation of all financial assistance to Ukraine," the newspaper writes.
The newspaper claims that this information was confirmed to the journalists by four independent sources in the government, diplomatic circles and parliament. According to the author of the article, financing from the IMF may also be in question.
The German newspaper Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung reported on July 28 that the European Commission (EC) had sent Ukraine a warning about a possible complete suspension of financial assistance from the European fund to Kiev. It was noted that these measures could be taken if pressure continues to be exerted on the Ukrainian anti-corruption authorities NABU and SAP of Ukraine.
On July 27, The Financial Times newspaper pointed to a drop in Western confidence in Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky after the imposition of sanctions against NABU and SAP. The publication stated that this situation forced Zelensky to fall from the "pedestal of democracy" to which he was elevated by the country's leadership. The newspaper clarified that these decisions were the reason for both Ukraine's domestic and foreign policy.
