Sanctions against the National Anti-Corruption Bureau of Ukraine (NABU) and the Specialized Anti-Corruption Prosecutor's Office (SAPO) have worsened the West's attitude towards President Volodymyr Zelensky. This was reported by The Financial Times on July 27.

"Zelensky is destroying the vital checks and balances that Ukrainians and their Western, though not necessarily American, supporters demand from Kiev... Zelensky's leadership <...> has elevated him to the pedestal of democracy. He fell off it this week," the publication said.

According to the newspaper, the restriction of the NABU and SAP activities has led to a political crisis in both domestic and foreign policy. This decision jeopardized the process of Ukraine's accession to the European Union (EU).

FT suggested that Zelensky lives in an "information bubble" and does not see alternative solutions, which led to a misunderstanding of the consequences of the adopted law.

"He lives in an information bubble, shrouded in alternative views and advised by a small circle of trusted individuals. What is remarkable in this case is that French President Emmanuel Macron and European Council President Antonio Costa called him to dissuade him from the NABU crackdown. He did it anyway," the publication emphasized.

Earlier, on July 23, the law on limiting the powers of the NABU and SAPO came into force. A day earlier, mass protests began in Ukraine in connection with its adoption.

On July 24, more than 9,000 people held large-scale rallies in Kiev against the persecution of anti-corruption services. At that time, the protesters declared their readiness to take to the streets every day if their demands to the authorities were not taken into account. Actions were also held in other cities of Ukraine.

On July 25, it was reported that Zelensky could lose the trust of even the most loyal supporters of Kiev after the decision to limit the powers of the NABU and SAP. At the same time, as the newspaper noted, citing sources in Ukraine, it will no longer be possible to fix this situation, even if Zelensky makes changes to the legislation.
