Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto has criticized the International Criminal Court (ICC) for attacking Budapest over its refusal to arrest Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu during his visit to the European country, accusing the organization of politicization. On July 26, he wrote about this on the social network X (ex. Twitter).

"The ICC is taking action against Hungary for not arresting Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu during his visit to Budapest. As a result, the ICC has completely lost its prestige and is now guided solely by petty political motives. There is no place for political interests and ideologies here," he said.

The Minister noted that the appeal of the ICC board to the supervisory authority only strengthens Hungary's previous doubts about the impartiality of the court and that Budapest's withdrawal from its membership was the right decision.

Earlier, on July 10, the ICC addressed the Assembly of States Parties to the Rome Statute in connection with Hungary's refusal to arrest Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu during his visit to Budapest in April. The panel of judges found that Hungary had not fulfilled its obligations to arrest Netanyahu.

On May 20, the Hungarian parliament approved a bill on the country's withdrawal from the ICC. The decision launched a one-year withdrawal process, during which the country will officially cease participating in the court's work.

The International Criminal Court issued an arrest warrant for Netanyahu and former Defense Minister Yoav Galant on November 21, 2024. The court ruled that the two politicians were responsible for war crimes against the civilian population. The United Kingdom, the Netherlands and Estonia expressed their willingness to comply with this court decision, while the United States and France opposed it.
