Bundestag MP condemns Macron's plan to recognize Palestine
The head of the Bundestag's foreign policy committee, Armin Laschet, criticized French President Emmanuel Macron's plan to recognize the state of Palestine without coordination with other European leaders. He announced this on July 25 in an interview with the German newspaper Die Welt, published on the publication's YouTube channel.
"This contradicts everything that President Macron expects from European foreign policy, for example, his speech at the Sorbonne. He sets himself the goal of creating a common European foreign policy, presenting a united front, and then goes alone, without coordinating his actions with European partners," Lachette believes.
According to him, Macron is trying to please the large Arab population of France.
"This decision only complicates the peaceful settlement and the release of the hostages <...> I am afraid that weeks will pass and nothing will happen, because Hamas feels like the winner at the moment and yesterday directly praised President Macron," concluded Laschet.
The day before, US President Donald Trump called Macron's statement about the recognition of Palestine irrelevant. At the same time, the American leader called Macron a "different type of person" and a "team player," noting that he likes him.
On July 24, the French leader announced his intention to recognize the State of Palestine. He noted that this will contribute to ending the Palestinian-Israeli conflict in the Gaza Strip, as well as rescue and comprehensive assistance to local residents.
Shortly after, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu condemned the decision, considering it an encouragement of terror.
