The dog handler gave advice on caring for elderly dogs
Vladimir Golubev, President of the Russian Cynological Federation, told how to properly care for elderly dogs.
In an interview with Radio 1 on Friday, July 25, he said that large breeds, unfortunately, on average live less than small dogs.
Golubev noted that the life expectancy of a dog depends not only on care, but also on natural factors. Nevertheless, the care of the owner helps the pet to live to a happy old age.
With age, the dog becomes less active, so walks should be shortened, avoiding heat and excessive exertion. It is better to simplify the diet: choose easily digestible food or specialized food, and add vitamins if necessary.
Older animals sleep more and lose interest in games — this is normal. It is important to ensure peace and from time to time include simple commands for mental activity. It is recommended to have checkups with a veterinarian every six months.
If the owner is thinking about a new puppy, it is worth considering how the old dog will react — this can be both stressful and stimulating. According to Golubev, the main thing is not to lose love and respect for a pet, even if it has become weaker.
On July 15, Golubev advised to teach the dog to be alone before a vacation. According to the expert, the reaction of pets to parting with their owners depends on their character. As a rule, socialized animals tolerate separation more easily, notes 360.ru . If the dog starts to get nervous and spoil things in the absence of the owner, then a long separation can cause her severe stress, writes RT.
On July 12, Golubev told us what to look for when choosing a home if you have a dog. According to the expert, one of the deciding factors is whether your dog belongs to a small or large breed. If decorative pets can live comfortably enough in a one-room apartment, then it can be difficult for a large individual in any urban space.
