- The Interior Ministry decided not to change the rules for allowing drivers over the age of 60 to drive.
The item that provides for improving the mechanisms for determining the admission of drivers over the age of 60 to participate in traffic has been excluded from the draft Strategy for Improving Road Safety. Irina Volk, the official representative of the Russian Interior Ministry, announced this on her Telegram channel on July 25.
The decision to amend the draft was made by the Head of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the Russian Federation Vladimir Kolokoltsev, taking into account the opinions of experts expressed during the public discussion. We are talking about the deletion of paragraph 34, which affected the interests of road users over the age of 60.
As indicated in the initial version of the draft, road safety among the older generation has been deteriorating for several years. It is noted that in the period from 2017 to 2024, the number of accidents caused by drivers over the age of 60 increased by 25%. At the same time, the number of deaths as a result of accidents increased by 33%, and the number of injured — by 22%.
According to the text of the draft, such drivers most often act as the perpetrators of accidents in comparison with citizens of other age groups. It is also specified that people of this age account for more than a third of the total number of dead pedestrians and cyclists.
Earlier, on July 15, it was reported that the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Russia proposes to review the approaches to the admission to traffic of cars with a right-hand drive, taking into account the security risks created by the operation of such vehicles. This is also spelled out in the new draft Strategy for Improving Road Safety.
