A project to create a workshop for the deep processing of by-products of reindeer husbandry is being prepared for launch in the Nenets Autonomous District. Collagen, a valuable raw material for pharmaceuticals and industry, will be produced from reindeer bones, skins and horns, the press service of the Russian Ecological Union reported.

They noted that there is currently no mass production of collagen from reindeer husbandry products in Russia, but scientific studies confirm its high quality.
Capital expenditures at the first stage will amount to 400 million rubles. The workshop will be able to process 1,000 tons of raw materials per year and produce 200 tons of finished products.

"The launch of a new enterprise in the Nenets Autonomous District corresponds to the goals of the federal project "Closed-loop Economy", which is part of the national project "Environmental Well-being". And according to the objectives of the national project, by 2030, 50% of agricultural waste should be involved in turnover," commented Irina Tarasova, CEO of PPK REO.

At the same time, more than 300 million tons of agricultural waste and animal by-products are generated annually in Russia.
The project for the production of collagen from reindeer raw materials was presented at the Council for the Development of the Far East, Arctic and Antarctic at the Federation Council.

Collagen is produced mainly from the skins and bones of cattle, pigs and poultry. Alternative technologies are also being developed: from the skin of freshwater fish, jellyfish, chicken scallops and paws. The resulting product is used in pharmaceuticals, the food industry and cosmetology.

On July 18, Moscow presented the business program of the international forum "Islands of Sustainable Development: the Climate Aspect", which will be held in the Sakhalin Region on August 1-2. The event will include thematic discussions on various issues of the climate and environmental agenda. The key event of the business program will be the plenary session "Russia on the way to a low-carbon future."
