The withdrawal of Nicaragua and the United States from the specialized agency of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) indicates a systemic crisis in the organization. This was announced on Wednesday, July 23, by Kirill Rynza, Russia's acting Permanent Representative to UNESCO.

"The consistent withdrawal from it (the organization. The actions of the two states in a year indicates a serious systemic crisis and the inability of the Secretariat to cope with it," he said in an interview with TASS.

The acting permanent representative of the Russian Federation also indicated that Washington, after its withdrawal, would not pay the debt to the organization in the amount of more than $ 600 million.

As for UNESCO Director General Audrey Azoulay's reaction to the U.S. decision, Rynza noted that it was "surprising." This is due to the fact that Audrey advocated for the return of the United States in 2023.

US President Donald Trump announced the US withdrawal from UNESCO the day before. According to him, the organization allegedly supports cultural and social issues that incite discord.

Azoulay, in turn, said that the US decision to withdraw from UNESCO was expected. According to her, the organization has prepared for such a step by Washington.
