The State Duma proposed allowing motorcyclists and mopeds to ride in designated lanes on a par with public transport. A letter with a corresponding initiative was sent to Russian Deputy Prime Minister Vitaly Saveliev, TASS reported on July 22.

The authors of the idea explained their proposal by the fact that the allocated lanes are often empty, and motorcycles and mopeds occupy an objectively small share in the total traffic flow.

The results of experiments on the admission of motor vehicles to designated lanes, which were conducted in Moscow, show that the risk of a threat to road safety in such cases is minimal, they said.

In addition, this solution helps to reduce accidents on the roads, the letter notes, since the standard width of a regular lane in the city varies from 2.75 to 3.25 m, while the width of the lane for fixed—route vehicles is about 4 m.

Earlier, on July 15, it was reported that the Russian Ministry of Transport had prepared a bill according to which all regions would have the right to determine the list of buses that can travel in designated lanes for public transport. We are talking about vehicles weighing over 5 tons and with a capacity of more than eight passengers. Currently, only the cities of federal significance — Moscow, St. Petersburg and Sevastopol - have the authority to determine the list of buses for driving along the allocated areas.
