- The political scientist did not rule out the involvement of the PRC and the Russian Federation as intermediaries in the context of sanctions.
Chinese and Russian officials may involve third countries as intermediaries, working in the context of sanctions measures. This was stated by political analyst Ivan Mezyuho in an interview with Izvestia on July 21.
He commented on reports that the authorities of the People's Republic of China (PRC) will act decisively in response to the 18th package of anti-Russian sanctions of the European Union (EU).
"I still do not rule out the possibility that Chinese and Russian officials may involve third countries to circumvent sanctions measures, which would act as intermediaries in some financial and economic trade transactions. In principle, now it is actually difficult to imagine exactly what mechanisms Beijing will take to minimize the negative impact of sanctions on its economy. But the fact that these actions will be taken, in my opinion, is obvious," the political scientist said.
The expert also pointed to the possibility of creating special legal entities in China that would help protect the interests of Chinese companies and simplify cooperation with Russia. In addition, he noted that Beijing may consider the possibility of a confrontation in the field of duties with the European Union.
"US President Donald Trump has shown the whole world that the war of duties is becoming something of a routine," the political scientist said, emphasizing the legitimacy of such measures in modern conditions.
According to Mezyuho, China is aware of the importance of maintaining global balances and does not intend to sever trade and economic ties with Russia under pressure from the West.
On July 19, the official journal of the EU (OJEU) announced the entry into force of a new package of anti-Russian sanctions against the association. At that time, the European Union imposed restrictions against 22 banks from Russia, including Surgutneftegazbank and Bank Saint Petersburg.
