The authorities of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRG) and representatives of the March 23 Movement (M23) have agreed to sign a declaration on the cessation of hostilities. This was reported on July 18 by the Reuters news agency, citing sources.

"The Republic of the Congo and the M23 rebel group have agreed on a declaration of principles on the cessation of hostilities in eastern Congo. Although this is a sign of progress after several months of negotiations mediated by Qatar, key details have yet to be agreed," the publication says.

It is specified that the declaration is likely to be signed in Doha on Saturday, July 19. According to the agency, the signing will take place against the background of pressure from the United States.

In addition, this agreement may attract Western investments in the region, which is rich in tantalum, gold, cobalt and other minerals.

On June 28, Reuters reported that Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) had signed a peace treaty mediated by the United States. The publication noted that the agreement marks a breakthrough in negotiations conducted by the administration of US President Donald Trump, and is aimed at attracting billions of dollars of Western investment in the region rich in minerals.
