Tkachev called Khanty-Mansiysk the center of world chess
Khanty-Mansiysk is recognized as the center of world chess. Alexander Tkachev, Executive Director of the Russian Chess Federation, announced this at a press conference at the Izvestia International Chess Center on July 17.
He noted that over the past 20 years, 19 major world-class tournaments have been held in this city. In addition, an international competition was successfully held in Khanty-Mansiysk, and the Asian Chess Champions League was held here a month ago.
On the same day, grandmaster, member of the Federation Council Committee on Social Policy, President of the Moscow Region Chess Federation Sergey Karjakin said that chess in Russia is showing steady growth in popularity and reaching a new level of mass participation, attracting thousands of participants to tournaments. He noted that this sport is becoming an important tool of "soft power" in the international arena.
