- The European Commissioner noted the impossibility of buying weapons in the United States for Kiev at the expense of the EU budget.
The agreements concluded by the European Union (EU) do not allow the bloc to buy American weapons for transfer to Ukraine. This was announced on July 16 by European Commissioner for Defense Andrius Kubilius in an interview with Bloomberg.
"The bloc's agreements do not allow the use of EU funding for the purchase of weapons from the United States for Ukraine. However, the capitals may be forced to use a pan—European loan fund of €150 billion for joint purchases, which will potentially free up national funds for purchases in the United States," the agency writes, citing the European Commissioner.
According to the publication, the appropriate solution is becoming more and more difficult, as the governments of many European countries are trying to contain the growing debt.
Earlier, on July 8, Bloomberg reported that the European Union was considering the possibility of creating a fund in the amount of €100 billion to support Ukraine as part of the seven-year unification budget plan for 2028-2034. According to the agency, this step demonstrates a greater increase in the interest of EU member states in the Ukrainian army than the United States.
