- A Russian woman who gave birth and left a child in the toilet was released in Turkey.
Russian Ekaterina Burnashkina, who gave birth and left her newborn daughter in a toilet in Antalya, was released in Turkey. This was reported on July 13 by the A Haber channel.
"The verdict of the local court to 15 years in prison in the case of Ekaterina Burnashkina, a 19-year—old Russian citizen who was tried for allegedly abandoning her child after giving birth in a disabled toilet at Antalya Airport in 2024, was overturned by the decision of the Court of Appeal," the publication says.
According to the agency, the court decided to release Ekaterina Burnashkina, reclassifying the criminal case from "attempted murder of a loved one" to "abandonment," which reduced the prison term.
Burnashkina herself admitted in A Haber report that she did not know about her pregnancy and she was not able to understand what was happening. When the woman decided to pick up the child, she was already taken to the police station by the local police.
One of the lawyers for the accused, Ayshegul Kyubra Polat, stressed that the verdict handed down by the local court for the crime was wrong and that they had been defending themselves from the very beginning as part of the crime of "abandonment".
According to the channel, Ekaterina Burnashkina was released on July 9, and she will soon be deported to Russia.
"As soon as I return to Russia, I will immediately pick up my daughter. She's very beautiful. I want to raise her myself," Burnashkina said.
In October last year, 18-year-old Russian Ekaterina Burnashkina gave birth in the bathroom of Antalya airport and left the baby there to die. The girl survived due to the fact that she was found 12 minutes after the incident.
A criminal case was opened against Burnashkina. She stated that she did not know about the pregnancy, but later expressed a desire to take the girl to Russia, as she is a citizen of the Russian Federation.
On February 24, a Turkish court sentenced Burnashkina to 15 years in prison on charges of attempted murder of a close relative.
