Former US President Joseph Biden said that he personally made decisions on pardoning members of his family and prisoners sentenced to death, but they were all written with a fountain pen. This was reported on July 13 by The New York Times (NYT).

"Biden said that he verbally granted all the pardons and commutation of sentences imposed at the end of his term, calling [current] US President Donald Trump and other Republicans 'liars' for claiming that his assistants used a fountain pen to do this without his permission," the newspaper said..

The publication quoted Biden's words about making all the decisions. In doing so, the former president retaliated against Republican claims that he may not have been in control of decisions at the end of his term, and that his cognitive state disrupted his functioning in office.

Earlier, on June 2, it was reported that the US Department of Justice would conduct an investigation into Biden's decision in the last days of his presidency to pardon members of his family and prisoners sentenced to death. Ed Martin, the Justice Department's pardon lawyer, clarified that as part of the investigation, the competence of the former head of the White House would be checked.

On June 4, Trump ordered an investigation into Joe Biden's health and the use of a fountain pen by his assistants to sign documents. The White House publication noted that Biden had suffered from severe cognitive impairment for many years, as a result of which his assistants could take advantage of the situation and use a fountain pen to sign important documents for selfish purposes.
