As a result of the reduction in US aid in Afghanistan, the food and health crisis has worsened. This was reported on July 13 by The Washington Post (WP).

"After the withdrawal of American troops in 2021 and the return of the Taliban to power, the United States remained the country's largest humanitarian donor, providing more than 40% of all humanitarian aid, helping to fight hunger and support health care providers," the newspaper notes.

Such shipments almost completely stopped after the return of US President Donald Trump to the White House in January this year. The American leader ordered the cancellation of support measures, which, in his opinion, "did not correspond to American interests."

After the abolition of the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) in Afghanistan, almost all American-funded humanitarian and economic projects totaling $500 million were cut.

"We have plenty of evidence indicating that U.S. taxpayer—funded aid to Afghanistan will be regularly confiscated by the Taliban and will not reach the Afghan people," the White House press service said in response to WP's request for comment on the humanitarian crisis.

The World Health Organization (WHO) estimates that the suspension of U.S. aid has led to the closure of more than 420 medical facilities, affecting more than 3 million people.

"Only one of my sons has a job. Our government has not given anything. And now no country helps anymore," said local resident Muhammad Usman.

Earlier, on June 8, The Guardian reported on the threat of complete disappearance of water resources in the Afghan capital Kabul by 2030. According to experts, the water level in the aquifers of the city has dropped by 30 m over the past 10 years. The main reasons are rapid urbanization and climate change. Almost half of the city's drinking water wells have already dried up.
