Rosatom plans to develop new fast neutron reactors in the Chelyabinsk and Sverdlovsk regions. This was announced to journalists on July 11 by the head of the state corporation Alexey Likhachev.

"We will build new fast neutron reactors in the south of the Urals, in the Chelyabinsk Region, and here in the Sverdlovsk Region, and replicate them in Siberia. Therefore, in the center of Russia we will have mainly a fast theme," RIA Novosti quoted him as saying.

It is specified that Likhachev made such a statement during a visit to the Beloyarsk Nuclear Power Plant (NPP) in the Sverdlovsk region, during which he approved the start of preparatory work for the construction of power unit No. 5 with the BN-1200M reactor. This is the first production unit with a BN-1200M IV generation reactor.

According to Rosatom's press service, the BN-1200M, which will be created based on the operational experience of the BN-600 and BN-800 units, will become the world's most powerful operating fast neutron reactor.

"The first concrete is scheduled to be poured in 2027. It is expected that the construction of the fifth power unit of the Beloyarsk NPP with a fast neutron reactor, a unique facility that has no analogues in the world, will become a driver for the development of the city of Zarechny," the press service said in a statement posted on the organization's official website.

It is added that the physical start-up of the BN-1200M reactor is scheduled for 2033, and it is planned to put it into commercial operation a year later, in 2034.

Likhachev announced in May that the first power unit of the Kursk NPP-2 nuclear power plant would be connected to the grid by the end of this year. According to him, the construction of the station did not stop for a minute, despite the proximity to the war zone. Later, Likhachev said that the construction of power units No. 1 and No. 2 of the Kola NPP-2 is planned from 2027 to 2037.
