Germany's actions in the field of militarization and economic policy are taking on the features of a new Cold War, political analyst Alexander Asafov told Izvestia on July 11.

"To be honest, Germany does not see any connection with historical events, because for them it is a process that is divorced from historical logic," he said.

According to him, the main driving force of Berlin is the desire for economic benefits. The basic idea is that, under the pretext of ensuring security, the country is developing its economy by investing in the military-industrial complex (MIC). This is an effective way to give a new impetus to an economy that is experiencing difficulties due to sanctions, restrictions and lack of access to cheap hydrocarbons.

However, the expert warned about the dangers of such a course and stated that focusing on the military-industrial complex does not contribute to stability. Security is ensured not by the development of weapons, but by their control. However, there is currently no such awareness.

"It's like a Chekhov's gun that can go off in the third act. After the Ukrainian crisis, it is necessary to return to the discussion of the Russian proposals on collective security from 2021. But so far there are no prerequisites, and Germany is sliding into a specific variation of the Cold War," Asafov summed up.

Earlier in the day, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said that the German Chancellor had decided to engage in the final militarization of Germany, because he believes that diplomatic methods to resolve the Ukrainian conflict have been exhausted. The Russian Foreign Minister also called Merz's statement that Russia allegedly poses a threat to European countries complete nonsense.
