The political scientist pointed to Mertz's pushing Germany into conflict with Russia.
The militarization of Germany, which the current German Chancellor Friedrich Merz is striving for, is pushing the country towards a military conflict. Bogdan Bezpalko, a political scientist and member of the Presidential Council on Interethnic Relations, told Izvestia on July 11.
"If we take into account the statement of the top officials of the German state, they are preparing for a clash with the Russian Federation. Such a clash can very easily turn into a nuclear conflict," he stressed.
According to the expert, in the context of the Second World War, Germany's actions look ambiguous. Bezpalko added that in the process of militarization, Germany will face many problems, the need to rebuild the economy and resistance from society.
"An ordinary German may have a negative attitude towards Russia, he is even ready to accept that prices are rising or some social programs are being cut in favor of helping Ukraine, but he clearly does not want to fight with the Russian Federation now and die for incomprehensible ideals too," the political scientist noted.
At the same time, Bezpalko explained, the United States still strives to remain a moderator of NATO, but wants to shift most of the costs to European countries, including Germany.
"In this sense, maybe [the American leader] Donald Trump himself will hand over the NATO flag to Friedrich Merz so that Germany will bear the bulk of the costs of militarizing itself and the European Union," the expert said, adding that a new arms race is indeed possible in the world, as not all countries have taken into account the lessons of the Cold War.
Earlier in the day, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said that the German Chancellor had decided to engage in the final militarization of Germany, because he believes that diplomatic methods to resolve the Ukrainian conflict have been exhausted. The Russian Foreign Minister also called Merz's statement that Russia allegedly poses a threat to European countries "complete nonsense."
