- Brazilian President Lula reacted to the imposition of 50% trade duties by the United States
Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva has criticized a letter from US President Donald Trump about the imposition of 50 percent trade duties and Brazil's attack on the US presidential election. He wrote about this on July 10 on the social network X.
Lula stressed that Brazil is a sovereign state that does not require other states to interfere in its own politics.
"The judicial proceedings against those responsible for planning the coup d'etat fall exclusively under the jurisdiction of the Brazilian judiciary and as such are not subject to any interference or threats that could jeopardize the independence of national institutions," the Brazilian president commented on Trump's accusation.
The Brazilian leader noted that Trump's claim about the US trade deficit is untrue.
"The statistics of the US government itself show a positive balance in trade in goods and services with Brazil over the past 15 years in the amount of $410 billion... Any unilateral tariff increase will be considered in accordance with Brazil's law on economic reciprocity," Lula said.
Earlier, on July 9, Trump imposed trade duties of 50% on goods from Brazil, he sent a corresponding letter on July 9 on behalf of the White House. The law will be put into effect on August 1.
