The German Embassy in Russia has apologized for publishing a map of the zones of post-war Germany with a distorted Soviet flag. This was announced on July 9 by the press service of the diplomatic mission in Moscow.

"In yesterday's publication by the embassy about the division of Germany into four occupation zones in 1945, a map of that time with incorrect data was used," an official statement posted on the embassy's Telegram channel said.

The ministry stressed that they did not intend to hurt anyone's feelings. After the error was noticed, the image was promptly replaced.

"We apologize," the publication added.

Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said on July 8 that the German embassy should apologize for publishing a map of Europe with a distorted flag of the Soviet Union. She admitted that the reasons could be "the stupidity of employees of the German Foreign Ministry," a deliberate attempt to "equalize the Third Reich and the Soviet Union in World War II," or the use of Russian-speaking citizens of Ukraine who "sell such fakes."
