Every year on July 8, Russia celebrates the Day of Family, Love and Fidelity, dedicated to the memorial day of Saints Peter and Fevronia of Murom. The holiday is dedicated to traditional values — marital fidelity, mutual respect, and the creation of a strong family. The Day of Family, Love and Fidelity officially entered the Russian calendar of holidays in 2022 by decree of the President of the Russian Federation. However, it was celebrated much earlier — in 2008. The idea of creating a family celebration belonged to the residents of Murom.

In the 1990s, the veneration of Peter and Fevronia of Murom, who are considered patrons of married couples, resumed in Murom. Subsequently, it was decided to combine the church celebration with the City Day. In 2006, Murom residents collected more than 20 thousand signatures in support of the establishment of the All—Russian holiday of families, dedicated to the Saints' Memorial Day on July 8. Two years later, the initiative was approved by the Russian Orthodox Church and the Inter-Religious Council of Russia.

For the first time, the holiday was held in Murom, the birthplace of Saints Peter and Fevronia. At the same time, the usual name was fixed for it — the Day of Family, Love and Fidelity. The daisy, a summer flower associated with pure and bright love, was chosen as the symbol of the celebration.

The story of Saints Peter and Fevronia has come down to our days thanks to the "Tale of Peter and Fevronia of Murom", written by Ermolai-Erasmus in the late 1540s. It is based on oral Murom legends passed down from generation to generation. The reason for the creation of the work was probably the canonization of Peter and Fevronia, which took place in 1547.

According to the text of the story, Prince Pavel once ruled in Murom. When he was away from home, a tempting serpent began to come to his wife in the guise of her husband. However, the princess discovered the deception and was able to trick out the secret of the snake.: he was destined to die from "Peter's shoulder, from Agrikov's sword." Upon learning about this, Pavel immediately realized that we were talking about his younger brother Peter. He found a wonderful sword and defeated the monster, but after that his body was covered with terrible sores.

Peter bypassed many doctors, but none could help him. Then he went to Ryazan land, because he had heard that there were many doctors there. In one of the villages, the prince met the daughter of a bee hunter, Fevronia, a wise and gentle girl. She promised to cure Peter if he would marry her.

The prince agreed, but after receiving healing, he tried to pay off with money and returned back to Murom. However, after that, the disease returned, and the disgraced Peter was forced to turn to Fevronia again. After recovering for the second time, he kept his word and married his savior.

After his brother's death, Peter began to rule Murom. However, the boyars did not want to obey the princess, who had no noble origin. They set conditions for the prince — either he is looking for another wife, or he leaves the throne. Peter decided to stay with his wife and left the city by boat.

Soon after, troubles began in Murom, as every boyar dreamed of taking the place of the departed prince. Then the Murom residents came to Peter, asking him to become the ruler of the city again and stop the civil strife. So the holy couple returned to Murom. For many years, they ruled their people fairly and wisely, and at an advanced age they took monastic vows.

Peter and Fevronia bequeathed to bury themselves in the same coffin with a thin partition. However, when the couple died, they were buried separately, as it was believed that joint burial was incompatible with monasticism. But the next morning, the bodies of the saints were again nearby. The miracle was repeated several times before the last will of the saints was fulfilled.

Today, on the Day of Family, Love and Fidelity, various events and actions are held aimed at supporting families and strengthening traditional values. The largest celebrations take place in Murom, where concerts, theatrical performances, historical festivals and reenactments are being prepared for the holiday.

Many Russians are eager to have a wedding or make a marriage proposal on the Day of Family, Love and Fidelity. Some registry offices even refuse to take days off if the holiday falls on a Saturday or Sunday. Orthodox believers visit churches and pray for the well-being of their relatives, especially their children and spouses. Single people turn to Peter and Fevronia in the hope of finding family happiness.

On the Day of Family, Love and Fidelity, it is customary to give daisies to loved ones — the main symbol of the holiday. Many also congratulate relatives, friends and acquaintances in messengers. Every year, thousands of Russians exchange good wishes on WhatsApp (owned by Meta, whose activities are recognized as extremist and banned in the Russian Federation), Telegram, Viber, VKontakte and other platforms.
