- BRICS leaders are concerned about rising military spending to the detriment of developing countries
The leaders of the BRICS countries expressed concern about the growing global military spending at the expense of financing developing countries. They announced this on June 6 in a declaration prepared following the XVII summit of the association, which was held in Rio de Janeiro.
"We express concern about the ongoing conflicts in various parts of the world <...>. We express concern about the current trend of a critical increase in global military spending to the detriment of adequate financing for the development of developing countries," the document says.
The leaders call on the international community to strengthen peace and security in an environment of "polarization and distrust," as well as to respond to these challenges and related threats through diplomacy in order to prevent conflicts and eliminate their causes.
On the same day, the BRICS leaders condemned Israel's attacks on Iran, calling them a violation of international law and the Charter of the United Nations (UN), and they also drew attention to the negotiations on Gaza, calling for an "immediate and unconditional" cease-fire in the region.
