Russians' spending on new cars fell by almost a quarter in May
The cost of Russians to buy new passenger cars in May decreased by 22.2% year-on-year and amounted to 285.2 billion rubles. This was reported on June 24 by TASS with reference to a joint study by Gazprombank Autoleasing and the analytical agency Autostat. Russians' spending in May was 12.5% less than in April. The financial capacity of the market returned to below 300 billion rubles after the April peak in late spring.
During the month, car purchase costs increased only for Korean brands (5.7 billion rubles; +2.7%), while these figures decreased for other brands. For the purchase of Japanese — by 9.1% (up to 16 billion rubles), European — by 11.2% (up to 41.5 billion rubles), Russian — by 13% (up to 46.1 billion rubles), Chinese — by 13.5% (up to 163 billion rubles), and American — by 23.7% (up to 2.9 billion rubles rubles).
Chinese brands retained their leadership in the structure of financial capacity, with a share of 57.2%. The share of domestic is 16.2%, European — 14.6%. In terms of sales volume for the month, Chinese brands are also in the lead (49.8 thousand units), followed by Russian brands (30.2 thousand units). The indicators of other market participants amounted to less than 4 thousand copies.
Experts have noticed a decrease in the share of premium models in the structure of the financial capacity of the market, which have a higher price. At the same time, the share of lower-cost cars in the mass segment increased, which also affected the total cost.
The day before, it was reported that following the results of the 25th week of 2025, the Russian automobile market exceeded the target of 500 thousand cars sold. According to the most optimistic forecast, the Russian car market in 2025 will not be able to achieve the result of 2024.
