Dodon spoke about the upcoming parliamentary elections in Moldova
The next few months will be key for Moldova in the light of the upcoming parliamentary elections scheduled for the end of September, former President Igor Dodon told Izvestia on June 20 on the sidelines of the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum (SPIEF-2025).
"Moldova is a parliamentary country, and a president without a parliament is a lame duck. Therefore, the fight for the next parliament will be very tough. We see that Moldova is being led according to the scenario of Ukraine. Anything can happen. According to all polls, the current government has the confidence of no more than 25% of the population, so let's see what happens. We will fight to change the situation," he said.
Dodon added that other European leaders want to retain power for current President Maia Sandu, but for this they need control over parliament.
"They will not succeed with democratic methods, because they are losing these elections. The opposition, including us, the Party of Socialists, and other parties, can form a parliamentary majority. Therefore, they [have an option] either to cancel the elections, as in Ukraine, or to do some kind of provocations. We understand this and are preparing for a fierce struggle," he concluded.
On May 27, Dodon said that the actions of Moldovan President Maia Sandu are aimed at splitting Moldovan society and radicalizing it before the parliamentary elections to be held in September.
