- The teacher talked about the intricacies of filing an appeal with low scores for the Unified State Exam
An appeal is a way to challenge the scores obtained on the Unified State Exam (USE). On June 20, Victoria Podsukhina, a teacher and head of regional teaching at the educational company MAXIMUM Education, told Izvestia how to file an appeal and what the consequences might be.
According to her, there are two grounds for filing an appeal. The first is a violation of the established procedure for conducting the exam, which may include various organizational violations. The second is disagreement with the grades given, when the graduate is convinced that his work deserves a higher grade.
"It is important to note that the time limit for filing an appeal is strictly limited: only two working days from the date of the official publication of the results," warned Podsukhina.
Among the most common reasons for filing an appeal are technical errors in the processing of forms, such as incorrect recognition of answers in the computer part of the exam, as well as possible controversial issues when evaluating detailed answers in the second part of the work. However, the specialist recommended that before filing an appeal, it is necessary to consult with a teacher or an expert, since there is an important caveat: as a result of reviewing the appeal, the scores may not only increase, but also be lowered if the commission finds additional errors that were not noticed during the initial review.
"The appeal procedure begins with a special application. A graduate can do this in two ways — through the administration of his school or by personally contacting the conflict commission. The address and contacts of the regional conflict commission can be found on the website of the local Information processing Center (RCOI)," the teacher suggested.
She stressed that when considering an appeal, the commission conducts a full re-examination of the entire exam paper, even if the graduate disputes the grade for only one specific assignment.
The conflict commission meeting itself usually lasts about 20 minutes. This meeting may be attended by either the graduate himself or his legal representative (one of the parents or guardian). Teachers or tutors are not allowed to attend the commission meeting.
Based on the results of the appeal, there are three possible solutions: keeping the original scores unchanged, increasing them (as practice shows, usually by 1-3 points) or, what is especially important to consider, a possible lowering of the score if additional errors are identified.
"If a graduate is confident in his rightness, you need to defend your position, because even one additional point can be decisive for admission to a university," the expert noted.
Earlier, on June 19, Podsukhina told Izvestia what to do if she fails the Unified State Exam. According to her, first of all, it is important to understand the difference between the minimum scores for obtaining a certificate and passing scores in universities. The fact is that the requirements of universities are much higher than those required for graduation.
