The European Commission (EC) does not intend to pay compensation to EU countries that are gradually abandoning Russian gas. This was announced on June 16 by European Commissioner for Energy Dan Jorgensen at a press conference following the meeting of EU energy ministers in Luxembourg, a recording of which was published on the EC website.

"No, we are not offering compensation. Many countries have already finished importing energy resources from Russia, paying a high price for it, it was very difficult for them," said Jorgensen.

According to him, measures to limit supplies from the Russian Federation should be long-term and remain in place even after the end of the conflict in Ukraine.

In addition, the EC considers the abandonment of Russian gas as an element of a sustainable energy policy and intends to present on June 17 a new plan providing for a complete ban on gas purchases from Russia by 2027.

Earlier in the day, the Financial Times (FT) newspaper reported that the EC's proposals to abandon Russian gas include a ban on concluding new gas contracts. It is specified that this decision was made as a result of the EC's intentions to reduce imports of Russian oil and gas to the EU by 2027. According to the publication, the existing short—term gas import contracts should be terminated from next year, 2026, and long-term contracts from January 1, 2028.
