Russia will take into account Canada's possible accession to the US Golden Dome missile defense system in its military planning. Oleg Stepanov, the Russian Ambassador to Ottawa, informed Izvestia about this on June 11.

"Therefore, we will continue to proceed from the strategic reality based on facts. If and when the Canadians become part of the American missile defense system, we will take this into account in our military and foreign policy planning," the diplomat said.

He noted that Ottawa is trying to "sit on a few chairs." According to him, Canada wants to demonstrate independence against the background of statements by US President Donald Trump about becoming the 51st state, and is also publicly thinking about diversifying international relations.

Stepanov clarified: Canada claims that it is able to exist without the United States and "replace them" on the issue of defense and security. According to him, this is where the statements about possible accession to the European rearmament program and the creation of independent collective political structures come from.

"All this is a searchlight. The reality of the situation on earth suggests that Canada has no choice. Geographically, historically, and culturally, it is destined to be an American satellite. Moreover, Ottawa, despite the bravura rhetoric, has been satisfied for decades and continues to be satisfied with the position of the younger brother. Outwardly, he grumbles that the "senior" has become more demanding under Trump. But there is nowhere to go," the ambassador added.

The Russian ambassador noted that Ottawa is more reliable with Washington, since it is "no alternative for them to remain under the wing" of the United States. According to Stepanov, no one else will be able to provide Ottawa with the same level of security and a comfortable life. He noted that Russia and China could do this, but at the moment Canada has "not matured" to such an idea.

On June 6, Bloomberg reported on the plans of the European Union (EU) and Canada in June to conclude a partnership agreement in the defense sector as part of Brussels' efforts to reduce dependence on the United States. According to him, the summit between representatives of the EU and Canada is scheduled for June 23. It was specified that the agreement would allow Canadian firms to use the funds of the European defense loan fund in the amount of $171 billion.
