Merz said the Trump administration is indifferent to the fate of Europe

Friedrich Merz, a candidate for chancellor of Germany from the Christian Democratic Union (CDU/CSU), said on February 23 that the administration of U.S. President Donald Trump is indifferent to the fate of Europe.
Merz said that his priority is the independence of Europe from the United States.
"For me, the absolute priority will be the gradual strengthening of Europe so that we can achieve independence from the United States," the Handelsblatt newspaper quoted the CDU/CSU leader as saying.
According to the politician, the Trump administration is "largely indifferent" to the fate of Europe. In addition, he said that at the moment the European heads do not have an understanding of what position the US President will take in the near future on Ukraine. For this reason, it is important in the FRG to form a new government as soon as possible, Merz noted.
On the same day, the candidate for chancellor of Germany from the Christian Democratic Union (CDU/CSU) Friedrich Merz said that his party won the election on February 23, noting that it is now necessary to create a workable coalition as soon as possible.
German TV channel ZDF cited exit polls showing that 29% of voters voted for the CDU/CSU. The party Alternative for Germany (AdG) for the first time in history took second place in the elections to the Bundestag with 20% of votes. At the same time, Scholz's SPD won only 16.5% of the electorate's support, which is its worst result ever.
