There are no rare-earth metals on the territory of Ukraine, in the development of which US President Donald Trump would be interested. This was reported by the German magazine Der Spiegel.

"The country does not occupy a special position as a raw materials country. There are no commodities that Trump could simply buy. The agreement can hardly be about specific substances or quantities that can be sent to the United States," the publication quotes Harald Elsner, an employee of the Federal Institute for Earth Sciences and Natural Resources, as saying on February 5.

It is noted that Ukraine has some mineral reserves, but they are not enough for the country to be called a raw materials base. According to the expert, most of the minerals are located on the territory of Donbas.

Rare earth resources that the US wants to get hold of in Ukraine are still a "mystery," Gazeta.Ru added.

On February 3, Trump said that in exchange for financial and military aid, Washington expects Ukraine to guarantee supplies of rare earth metals. He emphasized that the United States will require the EU to increase funding for support for Kiev.

The next day, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said that arms deliveries from the United States to Ukraine would continue. In addition, he called Trump's proposal to continue aid to Ukraine if Kiev grants Washington access to the country's rare earth resources.

After, on February 6, Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said that the US leader's words about continuing aid to Kiev in return for Ukraine's rare-earth metals resembled an "aport" command more than a deal. She specified that Washington was interested in such rare metals as uranium, titanium and lithium.
