Alexei Likhachev, CEO of Rosatom State Corporation, stressed the importance of joint work between the two organizations during a meeting with Rafael Grossi, head of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), on 7 February.

During the meeting, the focus was on the safety of the Zaporozhye nuclear power plant and other Russian nuclear power plants. Likhachev gave clear and principled assessments of the current situation.

"[Likhachev] highlighted the efforts made by Russia to ensure the safe operation of the Zaporizhzhya NPP and to establish life for people in its satellite city Energodar in the face of constant attacks by the AFU (Armed Forces of Ukraine. - Ed.). He emphasized the importance of joint work with the IAEA, including at the plant site," the state corporation said in its Telegram channel.

Grossi, for his part, informed about the actions of the IAEA secretariat in organizing work at ZNPP, and also notified about his recent trip to Ukraine. In addition, the parties discussed the issues of regular rotations of IAEA experts at ZNPP.

The agreement to continue contacts on a regular basis was confirmed.

The meeting between the director general of Rosatom and the head of the IAEA became known on February 5.

On January 23, Grossi said that the nuclear safety situation at ZNPP is not improving and the IAEA mission is far from being completed. The head of the agency recalled that inspectors who are at the plant have heard frequent explosions outside the plant, and this indicates a "continuing threat to nuclear safety."

Zaporizhzhya region, where the nuclear power plant is located, became part of the Russian Federation following a referendum in September 2022. Since then, Zaporizhzhya NPP has been under constant IAEA supervision.
