The Central Bank (CBR) of Russia has explained the reason for the return of paper bills in denominations of 5 and 10 rubles, along with coins, in 2022. The press service of the regulator said on February 7 that the population became more willing to use paper money after their quality had improved.

The Central Bank of Russia noted that in the noughties banknotes of 5 and 10 rubles were very popular with users, but quickly wore out, so they decided to gradually replace them with more durable coins.

"Over time, the situation has changed. People are now more willing to use paper money - they take up less space in the wallet and unlike coins do not settle in piggy banks. In 2022, the Bank of Russia resumed printing banknotes. Now they are additionally coated with protective varnish, which allows to increase their service life", - stated in the Telegram-channel of the Bank of Russia.

In addition, the Central Bank noted, printing paper banknotes has become more profitable than minting coins. At the end of 2025, the Bank of Russia also plans to present an updated banknote of 1000 rubles, the press service specified.

In December 2024, it was reported that the Central Bank of Russia postponed the release date of the updated banknotes of 10, 50 and 500 rubles due to a change in the approach to the development of banknotes. They are planned to be issued until 2028. The press service reported that the new banknotes will not be put into circulation immediately, as it will take some time to adapt the equipment.
