On Thursday, February 6, Russian President Vladimir Putin dismissed Roscosmos CEO Yury Borisov. Dmitry Bakanov became the new head of the state corporation. "Izvestia" tells what he is known for and what positions he previously held.
Dmitry Bakanov was born in 1985 in Leninsk, Kazakh SSR (now Baikonur, Kazakhstan). In 2007, he graduated from the St. Petersburg University of Economics and Finance with a degree in economics. He received a PhD in Economics with a thesis on the growth of national competitiveness.
While still a student, Mr. Bakanov started working at Link International, an investment company, as an analyst in the finance department. Later he worked with such financial organizations as EuroAxis Bank, VEFK Bank and Renaissance Capital. From 2008 to 2011, he worked at Sitronics, a diversified IT company, rising from internal control and audit specialist to head of the procurement department.
From 2011 to 2019, Bakanov was in charge of the Gonets satellite system designed to provide communication services. It is a network of low-orbit spacecraft that can be used to transmit data for personal communications, satellite signals, and GLONASS system coordinates.

He was responsible, among other things, for the development of the national transportation and logistics platform, as well as the introduction of electronic document management. In 2022, he was appointed Deputy Minister of Transportation under the leadership of Vitaly Savelyev. He remained in this position under the new head of the department Roman Starovoit.
In February 2025, Bakanov was appointed the new CEO of Roscosmos. He became the youngest CEO in the history of the state corporation - 39 years old at the time of taking office.
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov explained that there were no claims against the previous head of Roscosmos, Yuri Borisov, and the personnel reshuffle is due to rotation within the state-owned company.
In his Telegram channel, former Roscosmos head Dmitry Rogozin congratulated Bakanov on his appointment to the new position, noting that he knows him "as a savvy specialist and a decent person."
