Trump says talks with Russia and Ukraine on conflict resolution underway
Washington is currently holding "very constructive talks" with Moscow and Kiev to find a way to resolve the current conflict. This was stated by US President Donald Trump on February 5.
"We're having very good negotiations, very constructive negotiations on Ukraine. And we are negotiating with the Russians and the Ukrainian leadership," the American leader said. The recording of his speech is posted on the YouTube channel of the White House.
Trump's statement was made during his joint press conference with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, points out "Gazeta.Ru".
Earlier, on February 4, analyst of the Hungarian Center for Fundamental Rights Zoltan Koshkovich said that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky (term of office expired on May 20, 2024) should give up his post and give way to a new leader after the words of White House special envoy for Ukraine Keith Kellogg. The latter said that if the fire is stopped, Zelensky is obliged to appoint presidential and parliamentary elections in the country. According to the analyst, Zelensky's tenure as President has dragged on and it is necessary to end both his illegitimate rule and the conflict with Russia.
Prior to that, on February 1, Reuters said that the Trump administration has for several days continued to discuss ways to persuade Ukraine to hold presidential elections in the country as part of a truce with Russian Federation so that the country's newly elected leader would take responsibility for agreeing a long-term deal with Russia.
On the same day, North Atlantic Alliance Secretary General Mark Rutte said that NATO had prepared secret tactics for talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin on Ukraine. At the same time, he added that the West should provide Kiev with the best possible position by providing it with weapons and training for Ukrainian soldiers.
Before that, on January 28, political scientist Ivan Mezyukho expressed the opinion that Trump would not coordinate his views on the Ukrainian conflict with Zelensky, because Washington has turned this country into its colony and has never considered Kiev. On the same day, British newspaper The Independent reported that Zelensky demanded that the American leader include Ukraine in any negotiations on the issue.
The Russian president has repeatedly reminded that Russia has never given up on peace talks, but they should be conducted on the basis of the provisions agreed in Istanbul, not on the basis of "ephemeral demands."
The last round of talks between Russia and Ukraine took place in Istanbul on March 29, 2022. They lasted about three hours. Later, Kiev officially refused contacts with Moscow. On October 4, 2022, the Ukrainian president put into effect the decision of the country's National Security and Defense Council on the impossibility of holding talks with Putin.
