China strongly opposed the sanctions imposed by U.S. President Donald Trump and announced the filing of a lawsuit with the World Trade Organization (WTO). This was reported by Xinhua news agency on February 2, citing the Chinese Ministry of Commerce.

"The unilateral imposition of tariffs by the United States seriously violates WTO rules <...> China will file a lawsuit with the WTO and take appropriate countermeasures to firmly protect its own rights and interests," the agency said in its material.

In addition, the Ministry of Commerce added that it is necessary to approach the solution of problems relying on the principles of equality and mutual respect.

Also in the Chinese Foreign Ministry said that in trade and tariff conflicts it is impossible to win.

"China's position is consistent and firm. There are no winners in trade conflicts and tariff conflicts," the foreign ministry said in a statement.

Trump signed an executive order imposing trade tariffs on goods from Canada, China and Mexico on February 1. Thus, duties on imports from Mexico and Canada will amount to 25%, and on Canadian energy resources and imports from China - 10%.

In response, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said the country is imposing retaliatory duties of 25% on goods from the U.S. totaling $155 billion.

Also, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum instructed to implement a plan to impose ret aliatory duties against the US to protect the country's interests. She stressed that the Mexican authorities "categorically reject the White House's slander against the Mexican government about ties to criminal organizations." According to her, Mexico does not want confrontation, because if the United States is interested in fighting the spread of fentanyl, they need to work together with their neighbors in a comprehensive way.
