The first deputy chairman of the State Duma Committee on International Affairs, Svetlana Zhurova, has expressed the opinion that the plan of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy (whose term of office expires in May 2024) to communicate with U.S. leader Donald Trump before Russian President Vladimir Putin is pointless.

In a conversation with Lenta.Ru on Tuesday, January 28, the parliamentarian noted that it is not worth emphasizing who will be the first to meet or talk to whom," since certain negotiations may well have already taken place, it is just that the public is not aware of them.

"Zelensky publicly wants to get some kind of support, apparently, and voice it, but I'm afraid, most likely, Trump will not give him such opportunities. Yes, he will listen, but further still the general conclusion will be after negotiations with our president," Zhurova said.

According to her, it is unlikely that after a conversation with the US President "all the dots over i will be settled, and he will come out a winner."

"Unlike Zelensky, the main thing for us is what will happen in the end. And for him, I think, the main thing is the process itself, i.e. to meet, talk, declare, show, demonstrate. Our President definitely does not need this," - concluded the MP.

Earlier, on January 28, the Ukrainian media wrote that in the office of Vladimir Zelensky want to agree on the strategy of negotiations before the meeting between Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin. It is noted that Ukraine is already aware of the US preparations for the phone conversation between Putin and Trump. The Ukrainian government intends to pre-agree with the American side of the negotiations, notes 360.ru. Kiev is confident that Trump will plan further actions based on the results of the conversation with the Russian leader, and Kiev wants to "compare watches", RIAMO specifies.

On January 27, the British publication Independent wrote that Zelensky demanded from US President Donald Trump that Kiev take part in peace talks.

It is noted that Russian President Vladimir Putin, in turn, has repeatedly emphasized his openness to negotiations with Trump on a wide range of issues, including the Ukrainian conflict. Zelensky expressed confidence that under the Trump administration it is possible to reach an agreement on cessation of hostilities, writes the website kp.ru.

Meanwhile, Vladimir Rogov, co-chairman of the Coordination Council for the Integration of New Regions, said that Trump has no proposals for Russia to settle the Ukrainian conflict yet, RT reported.

On the same day, political scientist and military analyst Vadim Mingalev said that Zelensky has no right to cancel the ban on negotiations with Russia, which he himself appointed, since his powers as head of state expired in May 2024.

On January 24, Trump accused Zelensky of obstructing the settlement of the conflict in Ukraine.

The last round of talks between Russia and Ukraine took place on March 29, 2022 in Istanbul. They lasted about three hours. Later, Kiev officially refused contacts with Moscow. On October 4, 2022, the Ukrainian president put into effect the decision of the country's National Security and Defense Council on the impossibility of holding talks with Putin.
