Red-billed blue kingfisher spotted on the Gulf of Finland
A blue kingfisher was spotted on the Gulf of Finland in St. Petersburg. The bird is included in the Red Book of the city.
This was reported by biologist Pavel Glazkov in the Telegram channel "To each creature a pair". The rare bird was noticed by a schoolboy from Murmansk Georgy Boguslavsky.
According to Glazkov, the kingfisher is slightly larger than a sparrow, it has a large head and a large beak. It feeds not on insects but on fish. Feathers of kingfisher have a brown color, but because of the special refraction of light shimmer blue and sky-blue color.
In recent years, kingfishers began to stay for wintering in the city, notes TV channel "78".
In late December it was reported that biologists in Moscow in 2024 noticed eight species of red-listed animals in natural areas of the city. Spotted animal species are listed in the Red Book of Moscow under the zero category of rarity as probably extinct. They are the green woodpecker, the wedge-tailed woodpecker, the black kite, the field harrier, the common sedge, the gray heron, the golden-stemmed beetle and the laodicea pearl moth.
