Police will have the right to expel foreigners from Russia without a court decision

Russian Interior Ministry officials will be able to independently make decisions on administrative expulsion of foreign citizens and stateless people from the country for a number of offenses.

As TASS reported on January 5, heads of structural subdivisions for migration issues of territorial bodies and their deputies and heads of drug trafficking control subdivisions of territorial bodies of the Interior Ministry will now be able to do this.

Previously, the decision to expel foreigners from Russia could be made by judges and border guards.

It is noted that the reasons for expulsion from the country can be non-compliance with the rules of entry of foreigners, as well as violation of the regime of stay or residence in Russia.

The corresponding law will come into force on February 5.

On December 9, 2024, Russian President Vladimir Putin said that the concept of migration security and recommendations to improve legislation in the fight against illegal migration had been prepared in time. He pointed out that all measures in migration issues should be taken in such a way that both people moving for work from one country to another and the population of these states feel calm and confident.

Before that, on December 3, the head of the Human Rights Council (HRC), Valery Fadeyev, called to tighten migration policy in Russia. In his opinion, foreigners with unique professional skills should be invited for employment in Russia even without knowledge of the Russian language. However, he noted that applicants for citizenship should be subjected to maximum requirements - for example, they are obliged to join the military register.

Earlier, on November 22, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said that labor migration in Russia should be strictly regulated, but all rules should be simple and convenient. At the same time, Peskov added that Russia needs migrants for dynamic development.
