Mobile operators may independently block incoming calls from abroad. This was reported to Izvestia on December 24 by the press service of Roskomnadzor (RKN).

It noted that now a large number of calls from scammers are recorded from abroad, and both in the networks of Russian operators and in foreign messengers.

"Telecom operators can already now block calls from abroad by default. The user should be able to unblock all of them or those that come from numbers from his contacts," the press service of the RKN said.

The agency clarified that such protection measures are the responsibility of mobile operators to their users.

Some of them are now actively working on the introduction of self-prohibitions on the part of users of calls from abroad, emphasized the RKN, adding that the legislative introduction of these requirements is also likely.

"New approaches and technical possibilities to counteract voice fraudulent traffic, including in messengers, are under discussion," - specified in the press service of Roskomnadzor.

Earlier, on December 19, Roskomnadzor included in the register of information distribution organizers (ODI) in the Internet messenger WhatsApp (owned by Meta, whose activities are banned in Russia) and video call service Skype. In accordance with the legislation, ODIs are obliged to store data on voice, text, images, video or other electronic messages of users on Russian territory for one year from the date of their sending.
