EP says interference in Georgia's affairs on the eve of elections

On the eve of the presidential election, the EU is once again interfering in Georgia's domestic politics. Thierry Mariani, a member of the European Parliament from France, told Izvestia.
"The EU, which only talks about external interventions, is in fact the one who interferes in the affairs of other countries at the international level. The mandate of [President Salome] Zurabishvili is expiring. According to the constitution, a new president should be elected after the parliamentary elections. Everyone knows very well that Zurabishvili has no chance of re-election. Therefore, we are talking about a new attack on Georgian democracy," he said.
On December 12, the European Parliament delegation met with Georgian President Salome Zurabishvili, who is considered the informal leader of the pro-Western opposition in the country. The visit took place right before the presidential election, when protests have been ongoing in the republic for weeks and relations with the EU are at their lowest level in years.
