- The State Duma pointed to Trump's attempts to look like a "tough guy" at the expense of Ukraine
Former White House chief of staff and US Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump is trying to look like a "tough guy" who can resolve the Ukrainian conflict, which is the reason for his statements on the matter. This opinion was shared with Izvestia on Thursday, September 26, by Dmitry Kuznetsov, a member of the State Duma Committee on International Affairs.
The day before, Trump said that Ukraine should have made concessions to Russia even before the start of the special military operation (SMO). According to him, the country is now already destroyed, Kiev no longer has any trump cards, and US President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris are to blame, the Associated Press reports.
"I think Trump genuinely wants to be the tough guy who will solve all the issues. But he's not going to act in our national interest, he's going to act in the American national interest. So <...> we should not expect anything good from Trump. We need to work ourselves," Trump commented on these statements.
He also added that in Trump's speech the word "Ukraine" should be changed to the word "West". Thus, emphasized the interlocutor of the publication, if the West learns to respect the interests of Russia and the entire world majority, then the planet is waiting for peace and prosperity.
The day before, political scientist Ivan Mezyukho told Izvestia that Western countries, particularly the United States, were not interested in a peaceful settlement of the conflict in Ukraine and were obstructing fair negotiations between the parties in every possible way. According to him, the Biden administration is "coaxing" Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, whose powers expired in May, to continue fighting.
The day before, at a UN Security Council meeting, Zelensky said that it would not be possible to resolve the conflict through peaceful negotiations. In his opinion, Russia can only be forced to peace. He also condemned those who "want to talk" with Russian leader Vladimir Putin.
Putin, for his part, stressed on September 5 that the Russian side had never refused to negotiate on Ukraine, but not on the basis of "ephemeral demands" but on the basis of the parameters agreed in Istanbul. As Kremlin spokesman Dmitriy Peskov pointed out, Washington, Europe and the authorities in Kiev are now not inclined towards political and diplomatic means.
The special operation to protect Donbass, the start of which was announced on February 24, 2022, continues. The decision was taken against the background of the worsening situation in the region.
