Russian Railways may launch an unmanned long-distance train by 2030
"Russian Railways" (RZD) may create and launch a long-distance train with unmanned control by 2030. This statement was made by the head of the company Oleg Belozerov at the plenary session of the International Forum "Digital Transportation" on September 23.
"There will be an unmanned train with a person who will monitor the unmanned train and perform, probably, some parts of the elements. It's not some distant future. I think by 2030 it can be done," he said.
According to him, at the moment freight and passenger trains of Russian Railways already have a large set of automatic control functions.
Belozerov emphasized that even an unmanned train needs a driver to ensure railroad safety.
Earlier, on August 28, Russian Railways launched Russia's first unmanned train "Lastochka" on the Moscow Central Ring (MCC) . The company specified that the train drives itself, but the driver is in the cabin, controlling and opening the doors to passengers.
Before that, on March 27, Belozerov said that further system development of automatic control of traction rolling stock and the use of innovative developments are priority tasks of the company's development. RZD added at the time that it will also develop standards for the use of LTE broadband communication, which will be applicable to the use of remote control.
