- The best Christmas greetings of the Blessed Virgin Mary: in prose, postcards and pictures
Every year on September 21, Orthodox believers celebrate one of the most important holidays of the church calendar — the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary. In 2025, it falls on a Sunday. Izvestia has prepared touching greetings and beautiful postcards for this bright celebration.
September 21 is the church holiday of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary.
The Gospel says practically nothing about the earthly life of the Mother of God, as well as about what happened to her after the execution of Christ. The story of the birth of the Virgin Mary is described in the apocryphal Protoevangelium of James the Younger, written in the II century. According to this source, the Mother of God's father Joachim was a descendant of King David, and Anna's mother came from the family of the high priest Aaron, the elder brother of the prophet Moses.
The couple led a pious life, which was marred only by one thing — they had no children. In Jewish society, where everyone was waiting for the birth of the Messiah, childlessness was considered a punishment for sins. Therefore, Joachim and Anna, despite their righteousness, were constantly attacked and accused of secret atrocities. However, the holy couple did not despair, continuing to pray to God for the long-awaited child even at an advanced age.
Once, during a great Jewish holiday, the high priest of the Jerusalem temple refused to accept Joachim's sacrifice, as he "did not create offspring for Israel." Saddened, the saint went into the desert, where he began to pray fervently for the birth of a child. His wife stayed at home, also asking the Lord for help and mercy.
Finally, their prayers were answered. One day, an angel appeared to Anna, who informed her that soon she would have a daughter, who "would be talked about all over the world." Joachim received the same sign in the desert. Overjoyed, the couple hurried to meet each other and reunited at the Golden Gate of Jerusalem. At the same time, they made a vow that they would dedicate their child to God.
Nine months later, Anna gave birth to a daughter, Maria. When the girl was three years old, she was sent to be raised in the Jerusalem temple, where she was to live until she came of age and was betrothed to the righteous Joseph.
Like all celebrations dedicated to the Virgin Mary, the Nativity of the Virgin was established rather late. The first mention of it dates back to the 5th century, but it was officially celebrated in Byzantium around the 6th–7th century. This is due to the fact that the canonical Gospels practically do not pay attention to the life of the Mother of God, so the time of her birth has long been a subject of controversy.

Believers celebrate the Nativity of the Virgin Mary for several days. On the eve of the feast, the church and parishioners prepare for the celebration, and all-night vigils are held. On the morning of September 21, a festive liturgy is served in churches, during which the Mother of God and her parents are glorified. This is followed by four days of celebration.
Throughout the festive period, believers pray to the Mother of God. It is believed that on Her Christmas Day you can ask for everything, including a happy marriage and the birth of a healthy child. Some couples specially schedule a wedding and a wedding on September 21 in order to receive the blessing of the Mother of God for a long and prosperous family life.
In Russia, the Nativity of the Virgin was associated with the harvest and family ties. In the national calendar, the holiday was called Autumns, or Lady Days. It was accompanied by lavish festivities and feasts — the peasants celebrated the end of field work, thanking Mother Earth and the Mother of God for the harvest.
The tradition of gathering at the festive table on the Nativity of the Virgin has been preserved to this day. On the holiday, many believers visit relatives and friends, exchange congratulations and symbolic gifts.
Modern technologies make it possible to pay attention to loved ones and remind them of the celebration, even if there is no opportunity to see each other in person. You can do this by sending a holiday card. Among the most popular subjects related to the Nativity of the Virgin Mary are images of the Virgin Mary, temples and church candles.
Congratulations in prose on the Nativity of the Most Holy Theotokos
The Nativity of the Virgin is a special holiday for Orthodox believers. This is the first major celebration of the church year, which begins on September 1. In this way, the clergy and parishioners seem to recall the story of the salvation of the human race from the very beginning — from the birth of the One who is destined to become the Mother of God and bring the Messiah into the human world.
The Nativity of the Virgin is considered a family holiday, because during it they remember not only the Virgin Mary, but also her parents. Nevertheless, you can congratulate all the believers you know on this day, because the joy of the great celebration should be shared with everyone. Here's how it can be done.
