July 20 — Metallurgist's Day: how to celebrate the holiday in 2025

Every year, on the third Sunday of July, metallurgists and all those whose work is somehow related to the field of metallurgy celebrate their professional holiday. In 2025, the holiday date falls on July 20th. Izvestia tells us when Metallurgist's Day appeared and how it is celebrated in Russia.

The history of the Metallurgist's Day holiday

The metallurgical industry appeared in Russia in the 17th century. Initially, its center was located near Tula, and then moved to the Urals. Today, the industry employs about 1 million metallurgists who produce products for construction, transport, electronics, the nuclear industry and the country's defense complex.

The work of metallurgists has always been considered important and honorable. In 1957, a separate holiday was established in their honor — Metallurgist's Day. At the same time, it was established to celebrate it on the third Sunday of July. The date has not changed since then.

For almost 70 years, steelworkers, distributors, foundry workers, smelters, blast furnace workers, miners, as well as scientists studying metals, teachers and students of specialized universities have been congratulated on this day. On the holiday, the best are awarded the honorary title of "Honored Metallurgist of Russia".

Metallurgist's Day in 2024 — how to celebrate

Metallurgist's Day is celebrated on a special scale in cities with large industrial enterprises — Magnitogorsk, Chelyabinsk, Cherepovets, Verkhnyaya Pyshma. In most of them, metallurgical enterprises are city-forming. Therefore, the holiday is often celebrated simultaneously with the City Day. Festive concerts, conferences, exhibitions and other events are held here. Every year metallurgists are congratulated by the heads of enterprises, regional authorities and top officials of the state, including the president.

New enterprises are traditionally launched in honor of the holiday. So, in 2024, three production facilities were launched at once in the Chelyabinsk, Nizhny Novgorod regions and the Donetsk People's Republic (DPR).

Events for Metallurgist's Day in 2025

On July 19, a large playground for children and adults will open in Amursk on the main square of the city. Guests of the event will be able to try on work clothes, participate in ore mining and answer questions in intellectual games. An extensive concert program has also been prepared for the holiday.

From July 15 to 17, Norilsk will celebrate not only Metallurgist's Day, but also the 70th anniversary of the Norilsk Mining and Metallurgical Combine. And Krasnoyarsk will host a big concert with the participation of Russian pop stars.

The celebrations will be held in Magnitogorsk from July 18 to July 20. On the first day, local musical groups, as well as People's Artist of Russia Oleg Gazmanov, will perform at the Metallurg Arena for residents of the city. A large-scale fireworks display will be launched in the evening. On July 19 and 20, sports events, games, contests and quests will be held on the territory of the Attraction resort.

Festive events will also be held in other Russian cities.
