Europe named the most drinkable countries in the region

Portugal, Italy and Belgium have become leaders among the EU countries in terms of the proportion of the population who drinks alcohol daily. This was announced on September 28 by the statistical service of Eurostat.

According to statistics from last year, in Portugal, 16% of residents over the age of 16 drink every day. In Italy, this figure is noticeably lower and amounts to 7.9%, in Belgium and Denmark 7.5% of citizens have a habit of daily alcohol consumption. The Netherlands closes the top five with a score of 6.3% and France, where the figure was 5.9%.

In the European Union as a whole, 4.8% of the population over the age of 16 consumed alcohol daily in 2025. 19.2% of residents took alcohol weekly, and 21.8% took it monthly. At the same time, 20.7% of Europeans drink less than once a month, and 33.5% did not drink alcohol at all during the year.

Statistics have revealed a significant gender gap in the frequency of alcohol consumption. In 2025, 56.5% of men drank alcohol at least once a month, while among women this figure was 35.9%.

In addition, experts have recorded the dependence of habits on age. The proportion of people who consume alcoholic beverages daily is growing as the population ages: if in the age group from 16 to 24 it is only 0.8%, then among people over 65 the figure reaches 8.9%.

At the end of December last year, the World Health Organization reported that in the European region, one in three deaths caused by violence or injury is associated with the consumption of alcoholic beverages. According to experts, alcohol consumption in Europe annually leads to about 800 thousand deaths.
